2015 GRLT Artist-in-Residence
ROCKLAND — The Georges River Land Trust and the K2 Family Foundation introduce their 2015 Artist-in-Residence, George Mason of Damariscotta Mills.
Mason is the third artist-in-residence of this partnership that offers professional visual artists, performing artists, and writers the opportunity to pursue their artistic disciplines while being inspired by the Georges River watershed's landscapes.
George Mason has a background in ceramic architectural tile and his work is steeped in the exploration of materials and history. A centerpiece of Mason's work as the artist-in-residence will focus on the potentially powerful interface of art and land to help build, confirm, and sustain a sense of community, and to be a voice of encouragement for getting out on the land.
Mason has been a recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts awards, and was a founder of Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. Mason has taught at Cranbrook Academy of Art, the College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Ohio State, U.C. Boulder, and Haystack.
In his home state of Maine, he has shown at The Portland Museum of Art, The Center for Maine Contemporary Art, with solo shows at The Farnsworth Museum, and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
As part of the residency, Mason will showcase his art and interact with the community in the landscapes of the Georges River watershed during the next year.
Among events planned, Mason will create on-site installations in the watershed for each of the four seasons to observe the season's transformative influence and the artwork's response to that influence.
Georges River Land Trust is committed to encouraging citizens to discover the river and care for the land throughout the 14 communities in the Georges River watershed.
