Teaching through the Vietnam War: A memoir featured at Belfast Library talk
BELFAST—Len Yannielli will talk about his memoir Moon Shadow of War Tuesday, June 24, at the Belfast Free Library at 6:30 pm.
Len shares his experiences of his teaching during the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War. More teachers were fired during the Vietnam War era than at the height of the Cold War of the 1950s. He was one of them.
As a young teacher, Yannielli’s opposition to the war ranged from a peace poster in his eighth grade science classroom to a huge, black “Z” taped to the trunk of his car. He fought the military draft while finding his own purpose in life.
Originally from Waterbury, Connecticut, Yannielli holds two master’s degrees, won a National Educator of the Year Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers, Biology Science Curriculum Studies and the American Institute of Biological Studies in 2009 and is Professor Emeritus of Naugatuck Valley Community College. He and his wife reside on an island along the Maine coast in the summers.
This talk and book signing is free and open to all. For more information, call 338-3884 ext. 10.
