Haitian cultural events for children, adults offered in Rockport, Oct. 19
Fonkoze, a nonprofit dedicated to securing support for its Haitian partners working to alleviate poverty in the countryside of Haiti, is hosting events to celebrate its 30 anniversary and to uplift Haitian culture throughout the U.S.
The events are a Haitian Children's Book Reading and Rara Experience, and a Haitian film screening: ‘Kite Zo A’ with Producer Q&A
Haitian Cultural Children’s Book Reading and Rara Experience will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m., at Barnswallow Books, in Rockport.
Fonkoze invites families and children of all ages to join it for a captivating cultural experience featuring a special reading of Haitian children’s books, followed by a Rara music performance.
The event will highlight traditional Haitian folklore and storytelling, with a focus on engaging young audiences through literature and music. Rara, a vibrant form of Haitian street music, will fill the venue with its infectious energy, offering attendees a glimpse into one of Haiti's most beloved cultural traditions.
"The event is a perfect opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the beauty of Haitian heritage," said Fonkoze, in a news release.
A film screening of Haitian film Kite Zo A, with producer Q&A and Haitian culinary experience takes place Saturday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m., at Pascal Hall, in Rockport.
In the second event, Fonkoze hosts a screening of the critically acclaimed Haitian film Kite Zo A, followed by a special Q&A session with the film’s producer.
"This powerful film delves into an immersive celebration of Haitian culture," said Fonkoze.
As part of this unique event, attendees will also enjoy a Haitian culinary experience led by Chef Alain Lemaire, a renowned Haitian chef known for his exceptional dishes that blend traditional Haitian flavors with modern culinary techniques. Chef Lemaire’s hors d’oeuvres will give attendees a taste of Haiti’s rich culinary heritage. Live traditional Haitian music by members of Lakou Mizik.
