Catherine “Katie” Syrett, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Catherine Cooper Lovett Syrett, ‘Katie’ died at her home in Owls Head on Monday, May 27, 2024, after suffering a lung infection and kidney failure. She was seventy-seven years old.
Born to Sally Davis Lovett and John L. Lovett, Jr., on January 15, 1947, Katie had a younger sister, Mary Davis Lovett. All three predeceased her.
She was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and graduated from Kingswood School Cranbrook, after which she earned a BA in English literature at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969. Soon thereafter she married John Syrett and after a brief stint in New York City, in 1972 they moved to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada for John’s job as a professor at Trent University. There she raised two sons, earned a Bachelor of Social Work at York University in Toronto, and worked at Peterborough Home Care until her and John’s retirement to Owls Head in 2001.
Katie was a lifelong volunteer for countless organizations: the YWCA of Peterborough, the Queen Mary School Association, Planned Parenthood of Peterborough and of Ontario, the Owls Head Village Library, the Georges River Land Trust, the Knox County Democrats, the Rockland Public Library, and for elections in the town of Owls Head, to name only a few.
She was a voracious reader, a dedicated gardener, a lover of puzzles (both jigsaw and crossword), a skilled cook and baker, a political news junkie, an ardent Chelsea FC fan, a devoted aunt and grandmother, and above all, a conscientious and loyal friend.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2005; and is survived by her sons, Nick and his partner Michael Pahr of Lawrence, Kansas, and Tim and his wife Angela Brooks, and their two sons, Alex and Zach, of Newton, Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 3 p.m., at the Owls Head Community Building, 224 Ash Point Road, Owls Head.
