Bonnie Jo Hopkins, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Bonnie Jo Hopkins, 73, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 22, 2024 following a 6-month battle with cancer.
Born in Rockland, January 23, 1951 she was the daughter of Lester Durwood and Marguerite Alice MacDonald Mills. A lifelong Vinalhaven resident, she attended and graduated from Vinalhaven High School. Later she married Herbert ‘Bart’ Hopkins and together they had three children. Following their divorce, Bonnie remained close friends with Bart and his partner Barbara, who Bonnie called her angel.
She spent her life caring for others. After her kids were grown, she took care of her own parents. Bonnie was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing. She had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her cats, Lionel and Lily. First and foremost, in Bonnie’s life was her love for God and faith in His Son Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Next was her love for her family, whom she considered one of His greatest gifts. She loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, teaching them to cook and sew. Although she loved being at home, she was always up for a trip to Walmart, Reny’s, or a Chinese restaurant.
Bonnie’s family will miss her immensely; however they are comforted by these words from Isaiah 40:31, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Predeceased by her parents, Bonnie Jo is survived by her sons, James Hopkins and his wife Shannon Young, Greg Hopkins and his cat Stewey, all of Vinalhaven; her daughter, Laura Osgood and her husband Philip of Vinalhaven; brother, William D. ‘Bill’ Mills and his wife Joy Wadleigh Mills of Vinalhaven; a special cousin, Roseann Bickford of Vinalhaven; her grandchildren, Kassandra Hopkins and fiancé Nate Quigley, Carolyn Hopkins and her fiancé Josef Guptil, Joe Hopkins, Jason Moody and fiancé Carmen York, Hannah Jo Moody and partner Ruby Hopkins, Andrew Moody and fiancée Skyler Sanborn, Frank Osgood, Emilie Osgood and partner Jordan Radley; her great-grandchildren, Vienna Margurite and Prudence Elena; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside celebration of life will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Browns Head Cemetery, Vinalhaven.
