Lois N. Engelking, obituary
WARREN — Lois Norwood Engelking died peacefully on January 26, 2024, in Newcastle, Maine. She was born in Rockland, Maine, the daughter of Leroy Hastings Norwood and Avis Newman Norwood. Lois grew up in Warren, Maine, where she and her sisters studied hard, played hard, and grew up during the Great Depression and the Second World War.
Lois was a 1945 graduate of Warren High School and a 1949 graduate of Colby College. After college, Lois pursued many interests and career paths, from all over New England to multiple locations in Florida and California.
While working for General Electric in California, Lois Norwood met a wonderful nuclear engineer named Harlan Engelking. They were married in 1982. They started their life together in San Jose, California, but, in later years, Harlan’s job relocated them to Washington State and to New York State. When Harlan retired from GE, they returned to Lois’s family home in Warren, Maine.
Lois loved her family, and she loved being active. In younger days, she enjoyed skiing, hiking, and biking. To her nieces and nephews (and later, their kids), she was the “fun aunt.” Lois was always ready to conquer anyone at Scrabble and any kind of card game. She was a life-long learner when it came to art courses and learning to play music for her own enjoyment. Later in life, walking the Rockland Breakwater and going to local music jams were favorite pastimes. Lois was a member of the Warren Baptist Church, but she also enjoyed attending the Warren Second Congregational Church.
Lois was pre-deceased by her parents, Roy and Avis; her husband, Harlan; her sister Mary Stewart; and her nephew Mark Erickson.
She is survived by her sister Ann Norwood Stred and many younger relatives.
All are welcome at a casual gathering of remembrance for Lois. This will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 2 p.m., at the Brick School (44 School Street, Warren, Maine.)
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home of Waldoboro. To offer online condolences, or to share a story or photo, visit Lois’s Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com.
