Charlotte M. Martinez, obituary
ROCKLAND — Charlotte M. Martinez, 83, passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2023, with family by her side. Charlotte was born on September 1, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky to Amos Snyder and Wilma (Bischof) Snyder.
Charlotte moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 5 years old. She attended schools in Indianapolis and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1957.
After high school, Charlotte pursued her interest in helping others by attending the Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton for nurses training. After her first year of schooling, at the request of her family, Charlotte left school and returned home to help. While Charlotte was grateful to help her family she always remembered her medical training fondly and sought alternative ways to help others.
Charlotte’s father, Amos, introduced her to her future husband, Alfredo, while Fred and Amos worked together as window washers. Fred and Charlotte were married on March 12, 1965; they were together for 16 years.
Throughout her working life, Charlotte held several administrative positions, but was primarily dedicated to raising her three children as a stay-at-home mom. She spent 9 (+) years as a Ben Davis High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) mom, opening her heart and home for years to JROTC students. In her free time, she was an avid reader, and enjoyed crocheting and watching old black and white movies.
Charlotte was a strong-willed and independent woman. Not knowing how to quit, she beat cancer twice and survived when others would not have. Charlotte took great pride in her ability to preserver in the face of nay sayers. A woman of exceptional task and purpose.
Charlotte was a member of the American Legion both in Indianapolis and then later transferring to the American Legion Post 1 when she moved to Rockland, Maine. She also volunteered at hospice facilities and at Zoe, A Women’s Center in Rockport.
Charlotte was predeceased by her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Michell Gaddi and husband Stephen; son Stan Martinez and wife Evelyn; son Antonio Martinez; sisters Phyllis Pancake and Kathryn Godwin, as well as 3 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Charlotte’s family will honor her life privately.
