Jacobus Hendrik Bouman, obituary
PROSPECT — Jacobus Hendrik Bouman, better known as J., “just J Period,” 80 years old, of Prospect, Maine passed away on May 20 after 17 years of dealing with serious health issues. His wife, Beth, often referred to him as her “Miracle Man” as he always managed to pull through life-threatening situations.
He was born on July 29, 1941 to Lauwrina Adriaanse Bouman and Jacobus Hendrik Bouman in Rotterdam, Holland where he grew up with his 3 siblings, Ria, Robert and Thomas. He was born during the time of the German Invasion of Holland during WWII and his parents were part of the Dutch Resistance.
J. grew up in Holland and came to the United States of America In 1960. In 1984 he became an American citizen.
J. had a love for life and a gift for observing the world around him. He enjoyed all things in nature, being on the water, sailing, kayaking, fishing, camping, skydiving, white water rafting and tropical vacations. He enjoyed woodworking, cooking, word puzzles, and relaxing on the front porch with a good cigar. In his earlier years he studied Kodokan Judo, earned his black belt and was an instructor of Judo for a period of time.
J. is survived by his wife, Beth A. Meier; his daughters Pamela Bouman Shaffer, Brandi Bouman Hatch, Martha Kimberly Bouman Thobe; his son Jacobus Hendrik Bouman; his grandchildren: Ashley Bouman Shobe, Aubrey Bouman, Jazmin Bouman Hix, Kelby Jackson, Kaycee Hatch Mees, Rosslyn Hatch, Hazel Shaffer and Isaac Shaffer; his great-grandchildren: Kris, Ben, and Gabe Shobe, Maddie Hix, Parker Walters, and James Mees; his brother Robert Bouman and Rob's children: Joffrey Bouman and Laura Sue Bouman; and his previous wife, Sue Terry Turpin Engle.
J. was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister Ria; his brother Tom, and his son Terry.
A celebration of his life will be held June 18, at 1 p.m., at the Safe Harbor Church on Rt. 1, in Searsport, ME. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army which he has faithfully donated to for many years.
