Frederic Jordan Poor, obituary
BELFAST — Frederic Jordan Poor died on March 7, 2022 at Ocala Regional Medical Center, in Ocala, Florida, in the arms of his younger brother Daniel. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on January 19, 1948, he was the son of William Osgood Poor, and Phyllis Jordan Poor.
He is survived by his sister, Janet Eckrote; brother, Daniel Poor; two nieces, Victoria and Jacquie; two nephews, Sean and Daniel; grandnephew, Lux; and grandniece, Penelope.
He is predeceased by his older sister, Nancy, who passed away in 1993.
Soon after his birth, the family moved to Hempstead, Long Island, in New York, where they remained until Fred was 11. He was a very energetic and happy young boy. He loved his Long Island neighborhood filled with precocious boys just like himself! In 1959, the family moved to a home further out on the island called Fort Salonga. This is where his talents began to emerge, as he became a great accordion player, drummer, a wonderful artist, a Baryshnikov-like football player, and a billiard shark!
Added to these skills was Fred’s infectious sense of humor that kept his brother and sisters filled with anticipation whenever he walked into a room. They could always count on him for gut wrenching laughs as he impersonated the likes of Johnathan Winters, the wild and wacky comedian of the 1960’s, as well as Soupy Sales, and Jackie Gleason.
Fred graduated high school from Kings Park, New York, and left for Vietnam in August of 1967. As an army serviceman, he spent three years as a Control Room Technician, earning a national defense service medal, three Bronze stars, and the distinguished Sharpshooter marksmanship badge. Upon his return from Vietnam in August of 1970, Fred struggled with PTSD. He spent many of the thirty years that followed in New Jersey, and then Maine, until he moved to Florida at the end of 2001, to be near his brother Dan and family.
Fred requested long ago to be laid to rest back in Belfast, in the family plot, with his parents, sister Nancy, and generations of Poor’s from Belfast.
Fred was a devoted Christian, and student of the Bible, often reciting scripture, verbatim to the amazement of any listener. As he got older he spent much of his time reading numerous translations and versions of the Bible, and reflecting on their meaning as it related to his life.
Sweet, humble and always funny, Fred will be remembered for his kindness, humility, athleticism, artistry, guttural laugh, and for being a loyal follower of the Lord.
A graveside service will be held at 12 noon, Friday, May 20, 2022 at Grove Cemetery in Belfast with the Rev. Joel Krueger officiating.
