“Working at home allowed me to see my first-ever Baltimore Oriole!,” wrote Holly Anderson, of Camden, May 24. “A Facebook friend suggested putting out grape jelly and oranges and voila!, a day later an Oriole flew in for some jelly I made and canned last summer.”

Invasive plants, like viruses, can grow exponentially so delaying action is a bad idea (as one local family found). Shown here is their pile of uprooted and cut invasive plants– primarily Asiatic bittersweet – about 5’x5’x15’ (loppers shown for scale). This is a great time of year to remove invasive plants, with bittersweet readily visible and barberry just starting to leaf out. Tiki the Chihuahua and Suki the Terrier are best friends. Although they don’t live together they share many sleepovers. In the beginning of April, Suki’s mother tested positive for Covid19 which forced Suki and Tiki to be in quarantine from each other. A few weeks ago they were reunited for a short walk.This past weekend they were able to spend some quality time together. Yes, even our pets are affected by this virus! Our first gallery of reader-submitted photos has overflowed, and we thank each of you for your contributions.
From abnormally barren Main Streets to the Midcoast’s breathtaking sceneries, our first gallery captured the essence of these trying times.
We have created Gallery II, as we continue to chronicle Life in Maine During a Pandemic, an important endeavor amid these strange times.
These are historic times, and this collection will join Midcoast Maine establishes new normal with a sense of grace, which we created in mid-March 2020.
Through the fear and as we establish a new normalcy, it’s clear that Mainers continue to focus on the beauty of where they live.
We count our blessings every day.
Mainers, sensible and naturally inclined to being outside more than inside, are moving around, working, walking, running, hiking, taking drives.
They are slowing down, waving to each other in a way that we haven’t seen since in a long time.
Gardens are getting cleaned up in advance of planting. Boats are worked on.
Houses, yards, business buildings and new libraries are painted, spruced up, built.
It is a trying and anxious time, but Maine people are rugged and find innovative ways to muddle through troubles.
This is a collection, a repository of photos reflecting life on the Midcoast, in the time of COVID-19.
We still truly don’t know where the next weeks will take us, but we are in it all together.
To the residents of local retirement communities whose doors are closed for safety’s sake, we send you greetings and all our love!
To the hospital workers and EMTs on the front lines, we continue to thank you!
To teachers pressing on with virtual instruction, via Zoom or other virtual classroom technology, we got your backs. It’s hard but the students still need to hear you!
To the business owners eagerly awaiting a return to normal business operations, we support you amid these challenging times, much like you have supported your communities.
