Friends of Rockport Library celebrate 50th year book sale
ROCKPORT — This summer marks the 50th year of the Friends of Rockport Public Library’s annual book sale. Since 1969, Friends have collected, sorted, and sold countless donated books of all genres in a giant, multi-day book sale that draws browsers and buyers from across the region, according to the Friends, in a news release.
Over the years, this event provides donations for the Library’s purchase of new books, multimedia resources, technology and equipment, as well as non-budgeted items like the butterfly garden, book carts and some programming.
The Friends of Rockport Public Library will hold the 50th annual book sale from Thursday, July 11, through Sunday, July 14, at the Midcoast Recreation Center on Route 90, in Rockport.
A dedicated group of volunteers collects and organizes donated books all year, sorting them into categories for easy browsing.
The giant three-day book sale will feature thousands of assorted books of all genres, including several early signed Pearl Buck novels; a signed (and rare!) copy of L.L. Bean’s autobiography; over 60 boxes of art, antiques, photography, and architecture books; and lots of fiction, particularly mysteries.
“Whether you’re a history buff, a railroad aficionado, or an avid reader looking to feed your habit, the Friends’ Book Sale has something for you!” the Friends said.
The Book Sale begins on Thursday, July 11, with a Friends-only sale from 5 to 7 p.m. Members can preview the sale and buy a set number of books. New members are welcome to sign up ahead of time at the Rockport Public Library or at the book sale. A year’s membership is $15 for individuals, $20 for families, and $50 for patrons and businesses. The Friends can only accept cash or checks for the sale of materials, and prefer that membership dues be paid by check.
The sale will be open to the public on Friday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On Saturday, July 13, the sale is open at 8 a.m. until noon, closing for 30 minutes, then open until 3 p.m., when the Box O’ Books sale offers books at a discount.
Any remaining books are available for free Sunday morning from 8 to 11 a.m.
