Wishing Maine a happy 198th birthday!
MAINE — On March 15 Maine officially celebrates the birthday of its statehood. On March 15, 1820 Governor John Brooks of Massachusetts officially declared Maine a state.
Brooks declared 198 years ago today that March 15 "will terminate forever, the political unity of Massachusetts proper and the District of Maine, and that District, which is bone of our bone, and flesh of our flesh, will assume her rank as an Independent State, in the American Confederacy." According to the Maine State Archives.
The northernmost US state is famous for its beauty, as well as its plentiful natural bounty including specialty items such as blueberries and lobster. Maine is also home to Acadia National Park. The Appalachian Trail ends in Baxter State Park atop Maine’s famous Katahdin.
