Windjammers fall to Freeport in lacrosse semifinals
FREEPORT — All good things must come to an end. That saying remains true, especially when discussing this season for the Camden Hills boys varsity lacrosse program, which dropped a heart-breaking 13-12 match to Freeport in the regional semifinals June 14.
“Camden seemed to be the dominant force overall, despite what the scoreboard said,” said coach Mark Hannibal.
The last time these two programs squared off, it was a rainy game and saw the Freeport Falcons squeaking out a win in the final seconds of double overtime.
Parker Lawson led the way with six goals, an assist and four ground balls for the Windjammers. Other key contributors include Jonah Cameron (3 assists, 3 goals, 6 ground balls), Marshal Spear (3 assists, 1 goal, 4 ground balls), Jack Orne (1 goal, 2 ground balls), Grayson Szmulias (1 assist, 9 ground balls) and Yani (1 goal, 5 ground balls).
Connor Winchenbach won 28 face offs, while Aiden Gordon saved 10 would-be goals.
“It has been an amazing season. We have all worked very hard to bring this team and this program forward, making it to the [regional] semifinals for the first time in our school’s history,” Hannibal said. “Thad Chilton, the JV coach, and I had a lot of help from volunteer coaches — Thor Emory, Wade Ward, Eric Denny and Jim Ostheimer.”
Next season, Hannibal said, Thor and Wade will be running the lacrosse program at The Pitch so they will not be able to coach. However, Hannibal noted that he has “learned a tremendous amount from them” and that they “have been encouraging and supportive in many ways.”
“Plus, they are just fun to have around,” he said. “Lacrosse is on the map and Camden Hills made a statement this year that we are claiming a place on that map.”
