Waterfall Arts hosts Art Camp, kids’ classes
BELFAST — Classes for kids begin in July at Waterfall Arts with two weeks of art camp. Teaching artist Bridget Matros brings an immersion-based learning-through-play approach for children age 8 to 12. Kids can take one or both weeks of this creative camp. Partial scholarships are available to those in need.
Art Camp Week 1: Out of this World will run Monday through Friday, July 13 through 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Early drop-off, aftercare and partial scholarships are available. Week 1 mornings will be spent exploring a different medium. Intergalactic mobiles, monster puppets, alien portraits, paper Pegasus; the focus is on fantasy, and the weirder the better. After lunch and recess outside, the afternoon will be spent in the clay studio with Linda Stec.
Art Camp Week 2: Inner Space will run July 20-24, same hours as the first week. Matros will guide artists through a series of projects that combine to make a "mini museum of me" to share on the last day. Favorites, dislikes, obsessions, memories and feelings will inspire art of all kinds and take it to the next level. Afternoons will be spent with Russell Kahn in the print studio.
Matros has been an educator for 15 years, teaching at every level and setting from preschool circle-time, computer labs for the elderly, and seminars for teachers. She developed and grew the Art Studio exhibit and program at Boston Children's Museum for 10 years and is a published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood education. In addition to leading the Bridge Afterschool Arts program and providing community events such as the AAAH events and Art Tent for Waterfall Arts, Bridget teaches art and singing at Cornerspring Montessori. Both Stec and Kahn are well known art educators with many years of experience.
Kids and families can make their own Pinhole Cameras with Mike Fletcher during a one-day workshop Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Building one's own camera is a wonderful introduction to photography basics for all ages.
Stec offers Wonders of Clay Fridays, July 24 through Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, teaching kids age 6 and older all about clay. Shawn Brewer will help kids 8 and older craft logos and designs and screen print them on T-shirts and other garments during his three-day workshop Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 4 through 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. Brewer is a printmaker based out of Portland and graduated from the Maine College of Art in 2012.
Another offering this summer is Saturday Art Together, parent-child art making sessions that offer memorable times together using fun materials without the stress of making a perfect product. Led by Matros, children and adults work side by side and learn ways to support creative thinking, problem solving and self-expression. The first Saturday session, Zen Morning: Japanese Paper Marbling, is June 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.
