THOMASTON — A woman who discharged a handgun inside the Thomaston Walmart store on May 10 has been charged by Thomaston Police.

Natasha Jackson, 34, of Waldoboro, was charged and issued a summons for reckless conduct with a firearm, said Officer Matt Cremonni June 3.

Police confirmed Jackson’s identity from footage from Walmart’s security surveillance video. After the handgun was fired, Jackson quickly left the store.

When police met with Jackson, she said that her gun’s hammer cocked and accidentally discharged, according to police. Police now have the handgun, according to Cremonni.

Footage from Walmart’s security video showed a woman walking down one of the store’s aisles and as she reached into her purse, her handgun fired.

Police found bullet fragments in the floor where the woman was standing in a store aisle.

No one in the store was injured.

A statement on Walmart’s corporate website regarding the open carry of firearms in its stores states: “Motivated by our desire to create a safe environment in our stores and clubs, we request that customers no longer openly carry firearms into Walmart or Sam’s Club locations in states where open carry is permitted – unless they are authorized law enforcement. As of September 2019, we are working to create and display new signage to help communicate this policy. We will continue to follow state and local laws regarding concealed carry permit holders.”
