BELFAST — Waldo County Dental Care, which seeks to increase access to dental care for low-income uninsured adults in Waldo County, has received a grant of $16,000 from United Midcoast Charities (UMC). The funds will be used to offset general expenses.

Waldo County Dental Care is part of a countywide initiative by Waldo County General Hospital (WCGH) to increase access to health care for people regardless of their ability pay.

“Research shows a strong relationship between oral health and overall wellness,” said Kent Clark, MD, chief medical officer at WCGH. “For example, studies point to a reciprocal relationship between gum disease and diabetes. That’s why the work we do at Waldo County Dental Care is so essential to our shared vision of making our communities the healthiest in America. This generous grant from United Midcoast Charities will help to ensure that we continue delivering great health care to as many people as possible.”

Dental services provided by Waldo County Dental Care include cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants, fillings and extractions. In some cases, dentures are offered, although additional fees may apply.

Waldo County Dental Care serves pediatric patients who have MaineCare as well as patients who are 18 years of age and older who live in Waldo County and have not seen a dentist in the previous 12 months. Income guidelines start at $21,105 for one person and increase by $7,315 for each additional person in the family unit.
 
UMC’s open, competitive annual grants process supports nonprofit agencies in Knox and Waldo counties working in the areas of food, housing, health & safety, and economic security. Every dollar donated to UMC is applied to its grant program, which in the last five years has awarded grants totaling $2.4 million to recipients. In addition, UMC offers educational programs and other learning resources for all local nonprofits, including those who do not receive funding.
