South Thomaston man identified as worker killed in West Rockport construction accident
ROCKPORT (UPDATE Sept. 2, 10:45 a.m.) — Police late Friday morning, Sept. 2, identified the worker killed in the Sept. 1 work accident on Mill Street in West Rockport as Franco Ferraiolo, 53, of South Thomaston.
His family’s company, Ferraiolo Construction, has operated in the Midcoast for 30 years and is located in Rockland.
Ferraiolo had been contracted by the town of Rockport to repair the bridge on lower Mill Street, near the south end of Tolman Pond. Work on the bridge commenced about a month ago, prompting closure of Mill Street to traffic.
Ferraiolo was killed when a bulldozer at the scene backed over him, according to Camden Police Lt. Michael Geary. Ferraiolo was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Geary said that investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are at the scene this morning, and are now heading up the investigation into what caused the accident.
Rockport Town Manager Rick Bates issued the following statement Friday:
On behalf of the Town of Rockport I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the families, friends and associates of Frank Ferraiolo. Frank and his company Ferraiolo Construction were the successful bidders on our project at the Mill Street Bridge. An unfortunate accident yesterday resulted in his death on the site. Our thoughts are with everyone, including personnel of the Rockport Fire Department and North East Mobile Health Services who were first on scene
ROCKPORT (Sept. 1, 4:42 p.m.) — An individual working with a contractor on the bridge project on lower Mill Street, in West Rockport, died late Thursday afternoon, after being struck by a bulldozer.
Rockport police and fire, and North East Mobile Health were called to the scene at around 3:45 p.m. But by the time the first responders arrived, the man was pronounced dead, according to Camden Police Lt. Michael Geary.
The identity of the individual who was killed is being withheld pending notification of family, according to police.
“It is a confirmed fatality and is a workplace accident, so OSHA will be coming down tomorrow to take over the investigation,” said Geary.
In the meantime, Geary said that someone from the state Medical Examiner’s Office was en route to do their work at the scene ahead of the team from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and then a local funeral home would be called to do its work.
