Something spell-binding is brewing at the Camden Opera House this weekend
CAMDEN - Rockport Dance Conservatory will present its 12th annual Spring Showcase Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25, at the Camden Opera House at 6:30 p.m. The show is sponsored by Midcoast Recreation Center in West Rockport.
Act 1 of the Spring Showcase will feature choreography students have been working on all year including some of their award winning competition pieces.
RDC continues to have a themed second act and this year will feature “Fractured Fairytales,” a dance interpretation of some of the most beloved Fairytales - including Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel.
Rockport Dance Conservatory is known for its blending of dance styles mixed all together in choreography to give stories greater depth and character. Characters will be brought to life with custom costumes and props designed by RDC director Kari Cameron, whose work has been featured in Dance Spirit Magazine.
"We strive to make our performances less like a recital and more like a theatrical show,” said Cameron. “We want anyone to be able to walk in off the street and enjoy our performance, regardless of whether they know a dancer participating.”
Cameron also said that audiences appreciate the show’s hour-long format because it allows them to enjoy the holiday weekend downtown afterward.”
The high standard of dance technique and the award-winning choreography taught at RDC equips their students to not only perform many dance genres, but also has given students the opportunity to achieve high silver, gold, and high gold ratings in their annual regional and national dance competitions.
Many of the pieces being performed at this year’s Spring Showcase took home Gold and High Gold awards with high scores at a regional competition earlier this year.
The strong technical background helps students bring great dancing skills to other community performance venues including school talent shows, school musicals, community fundraising events, as well as college dance auditions.
The Rockport Dance Conservatory Spring Showcase is Friday, May 24, at 6:30 pm and Saturday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for Seniors/Students, children five and under are free. Tickets are available through RDC dancers, at the front desk at MidCoast Recreation Center, or at the door on show night.
