Richard A. Walsh, obituary
ROCKLAND — Richard Ambrose Walsh, 69, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 11, 2026. A respected captain, mentor, and devoted family man, Rick lived a life defined by the tides of the Maine coast and a quiet, steadfast kindness that touched many.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1957 to Patricia M. and Joseph Walsh, Rick moved to Maine as a young man. After graduating from Rockland High School in 1975, he answered the call of the ocean. His career as a commercial fisherman spanned more than three decades, taking him from the waters of Florida to the rugged coastline of Midcoast Maine.
Rick was a fixture of the local waterfront, earning the deep respect of his peers for his tireless work ethic. He managed Atwood’s Wharf in Spruce Head for a time and took great pride in mentoring younger fishermen, ensuring the traditions of the trade were passed down with care. In the early 2000s, he obtained his Captain’s License and spent some of his most cherished hours aboard the Jenna Leigh II, navigating the waters alongside his son and his loyal dog, Jasper.
Outside of his life at sea, Rick was a hardworking entrepreneur who owned and managed several apartment buildings during the 1990s. He was known throughout the community as a man who was always willing to lend a hand. With a gentle soul and a non-judgmental ear, he had a rare ability to offer support to friends and strangers alike, leaving a legacy of quiet generosity.
In 1983, Ricky married Tonya Polky. Together, they shared a wonderful life and raised their family in South Thomaston.
Rick is survived by his children: his son, Jason and his daughter Islah; and his daughter, Jenna, along with her children Dannaleigh and Deklin. He is also survived by his sisters, Colleen, Erin, and Kerry, and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Tonya, and his brothers, Patrick, Joseph, and Shawn.
