Richard Alan Hill, obituary
Richard Alan Hill, 81, passed away suddenly August 5, 2024, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center. Richard was born in South Thomaston, Maine, July 31, 1943, to William Hill, Sr., and Signe Rytky, growing up in the village of Wiley’s Corner.
Honorably serving his country in the Army, Richard served his tour overseas in Germany. Following work as a Produce Manager at Finest Groceries, he became a Corrections Officer for the Maine State Prison in Thomaston
prior to its relocation to Warren, retiring after 18 years of dedicated service. His calm, professional demeanor earned him the respectful title of Mr. Hill from the prison population both inside and outside its walls. In his retirement Richard was a much sought-after caretaker and groundskeeper for local cottages and homes in the St. George and Spruce Head communities and will be missed by those who depended upon his special care and attention to detail.
Richard was a long-standing member of the Tenants Harbor Baptist Church, serving as a Church Trustee for many years.
He enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles. He had a love for old western movies and a passion for reading, frequently prowling small, used bookstores where he was adept at seeking out treasures for friends and family. Richard’s skillful hands were gifted at gardening, woodworking, and fieldstone masonry, and his gardens and projects showcased his strengths and abilities.
Richard is survived by his wife of 32 years, childhood sweetheart Sheila Thomas Hill; daughter, Kristina Hill; stepsons, Deryn and Travis LaCombe; sister, Gloria Dennison; grandchildren, Ashley Poole and husband Jon, Ethan LaCombe, Caeleigh LaCombe; great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn June Poole; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Matias Hill, Jr.
Richard’s life was defined by his integrity, trustworthiness, and the deep bonds he forged with his family and all those with whom he came in contact in his community and throughout a well-lived life. He will be missed and remembered as a loving and devoted husband, family man, and friend.
The family invites friends and loved ones to gather for a graveside service on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 2 p.m., at the North Parish Cemetery, Wiley’s Corner, with a Finnish coffee hour to follow at the St. George
