Rep. Doudera hosting affordable housing webinar March 30
For years, many Midcoast towns have struggled with issues of affordable and attainable housing. Now, thanks to the pandemic and a COVID-19 fueled real estate boom, the situation has become even more complicated.
Those seeking affordable homes — such as “boomeranging” young people, older residents wishing to downsize and remain in their communities, the unhoused, and more — all face the challenges of a lack of suitable places to live, a news release stated.
Representative Vicki Doudera, D-Camden, will moderate Tuesday, March 30 a Zoom webinar from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. featuring a panel of experts exploring local housing, solutions now underway, and strategies going forward.
Those involved in the many aspects of this important topic will also be on the call to answer questions and suggest ways to effect change. The public is invited to register and join in the conversation, and there is no cost for the event.
“Insufficient housing is impacting our economic growth as well as many social issues,” said Rep. Doudera. “As a legislator, realtor, and board member for Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, I see many facets of this issue, as well as possible solutions. For years I’ve imagined a local forum where we could gather, get the lay of the land, and share information. The time is now.”
Panelists who will speak on March 30 include Jeremy Martin, Planning & Development Director, Town of Camden; Tia Anderson, Executive Director, Midcoast Habitat for Humanity; Stephanie Primm, Executive Director, Knox County Homeless Coalition; Kit Harrison, Editor of Amjambo Africa, New Mainers Coastal Task Force; and Nancy Williams, Waterville Community Land Trust.
Safe and stable housing is a foundational prerequisite that underlies our most pressing challenges, from supporting those with substance abuse issues to assisting people affected by domestic violence; to helping our children thrive to growing diversity,
resettling refugees, and expanding our local economy, the news release stated.
“It’s a basic human need,” said Rep. Doudera. “How do we address these issues and remain vibrant and welcoming year-round towns when we do not have enough affordable, available and attainable
places for people to live?”
