Records galore at Waldoboro Half Marathon amid pandemic
WALDOBORO — The second annual Waldoboro Half Marathon occurred Saturday, Sept. 26, and featured all of 1,400 feet of Waldoboro’s finest, steepest hills.
The race is the brainchild of Lucas McNelly, the organizer of the Waldoboro Day 5K for the past four years.
“Waldoboro has a history of being a difficult place to run, and my goal is to embrace it as what makes the town unique,” said McNelly. “We always say that if you can run well in Waldoboro, everywhere else is easy. My original idea was to do this as a kind of casual group run, and when I told a few runners about it and saw how excited they were, I quickly realized it had the potential to be much more than that.”
With the tagline, “No Hills. Just Frills,” this race is not for the inexperienced, a news release noted.
The defending champion, South Portland’s Bryan Lamoreau, was eight minutes faster than his course record and finished third.
Five different runners broke the old course record.
Portland’s Robert Gomez set the new course record with a time of 1:19:17.
Judson Cake, of Bar Harbor, set a new master’s record with a time of 1:22:16.
Laurie Nicholas, of Gorham, set the women’s record and the women's master record with a time of 1:50:20.
