Raymond Albert Beverage, obituary
NORTH HAVEN — Raymond Albert Beverage, 81, passed away Friday, May 17, 2024 in his home on North Haven Island.
The son of Elston and Greta Morrison Beverage of North Haven, Raymond is predeceased by both his parents, his sister Sandra Beverage Snow of Yarmouth and his daughter Michelle Beverage Campbell of North Haven.
He leaves behind a devoted wife, Cheryl Cooper Beverage of North Haven; two sons, Raymond M. Beverage of North Haven and Timothy Beverage and his wife Samantha of Douglasville, Georgia. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren who affectionately referred to Raymond as their “Pa”.
As an islander for countless generations, he also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Raymond was best known on North Haven for his work ethic, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He was an accomplished carpenter, fisherman, hunter and skilled craftsman. The son of a fisherman and grandson of a lighthouse keeper, Raymond developed a love for the ocean at a young age. He was an active member of the North Haven lobster fishing fleet until he was 76 years old, with his wife, Cheryl, manning the stern. He had a quiet and intrinsic knowledge of the tides, weather patterns, bathymetry of Penobscot Bay and the island shorelines that can only come with generational wisdom and a lifetime of dedication.
Raymond passed his wisdom onto the next generation sharing his love of the ocean and trades with his children and grandchildren. He took them lobstering and hunting as children, taught them proper woodworking techniques in his shop and always shared his vast collection of tools. In his later years, even after retirement, Raymond could be found Halibut fishing with his grandsons.
In addition to lobstering, Raymond was a devoted groundskeeper and property caretaker for the Strong Family on Crabtree Point for over 30 years. During this time Raymond and Cheryl developed a lifelong friendship with the Strongs and continue to be close with their family today.
Raymond will be deeply missed, but his presence and wisdom lives on in his family and island community.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Fuller Cemetery, on North Haven Island.
In lieu of flowers donations in honor of Raymond can be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society, for his love of animals, and/or the North Haven Village Church Discretionary Fund.
