October 3 War of the Worlds

October 10 Fahrenheit 451

All printed materials are destroyed and banned, and the firemen actually start fires in this adaptation of author Ray Bradbury's cautionary near-future parable of an oppressive society in which free thought is verboten. Directed by Francois Truffaut; starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner.

After an isolated childhood, a 16-year-old albino boy nicknamed "Powder" is introduced into a small town, where a pair of teachers learn that he can control electricity and has an IQ that's off the charts. Classic, influential, and still very scary science-fiction (with Joseph McCarthy-era subtext) about small-town residents who are being replaced by duplicates hatched from alien "pods." Tense script by Daniel Mainwaring from Jack Finney's The Body Snatchers.
October 31 Diabolique

The ailing spouse (Véra Clouzot) and manhandled mistress (Simone Signoret) of a sadistic boarding school headmaster (Paul Meurisse) plan and execute the man's murder — but their plan goes haywire when the corpse vanishes. Henri-Georges Clouzot directs his real-life wife in this icy, black-and-white masterwork of homicide and Grand Guignol suspense.
Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted.
The Thomaston Academy Building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance and light refreshments will be served.
