Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame honors Camden-Rockport High School Girls Ski Team of 1975 and 1976
The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame announced that the Camden-Rockport High School Girls Ski Teams of 1975 and 1976 are being recognized as outstanding teams for winning the Girls Skiing Class C State Championship two years in a row.
The C-R Girls Ski Team was founded in 1970-71 by Coach Penny Crockett, starting with a group of six team members.
In four short years, the team had grown to 18 members and had won the first Girls State Championship in the history of Camden or Rockport, and they won again the next year.
In 1975, the Windjammer girls team took first place in Slalom ( taking 5 of the top 10 places)., first place in Giant Slalom (taking four fo the top 10), and were Runners-Up in Cross Country (taking 5 of the top 10) , resulting in winning the overall State Championship Trophy.
Individual honors went to Lee Montgomery, who took first place in Slalom.
In 1976, the team again took first place in Slalom (taking 4 of the top 10), first in in Giant Slalom ( taking 6 of the top 10 ) , and Runners-Up in Cross Country (taking 5 of the top 10) .
Individual honors went to Kim McKay for first place in Slalom, to Lee Montgomery for first place in Giant Slalom and in Cross Country, and to Polly Bell who finished as Runner Up for the Skimeister Award, for the best overall combined skier in all three events in the meet.
Ski Teams that were newly established in the 1970’s were initially classified in Class C , and as a result of the Windjammers’ success, the team was moved to Class B for the following years.
