Local assessors initiate Thanks for Giving Food Drive on Election Day
The Assessors for Rockland, Camden and Rockport have joined with their colleagues across the state to help those in need with an Election Day Food Drive. They ask citizens to take nonperishable food items with you to the polls (early donations will also be accepted).
Thanks For Giving was started in 2012 by Lyman Assessor Gina Merry. Gina’s food drive benefited Lyman’s local food pantry. Sadly, Gina lost her battle with cancer in 2016. The town of Lyman decided to honor Gina’s memory by continuing the food drive in 2017.
Gina’s husband, Joe Merry, assessor in Standish, inspired both by his wife’s vision and Lyman’s decision to honor her memory, contacted his fellow assessors asking them to participate in Thanks For Giving food drives in their towns.
Rockland assessor Roxy LaFrance and Camden and Rockport’s assessors, Caitlin Thompson and Kerry Leichtman readily agreed. As did their municipal election officers, Rockland City Clerk Stuart Sylvester, Camden Town Clerk Katrina Oaks and Rockport’s Town Clerk Linda Greenlaw. With their assistants, Dawn Overlock and Hannah Sisk, they’ve put up posters and worked to get the word out.
Rockland’s food drive will benefit the AIO Food Pantry in Rockland. Camden and Rockport’s food drive will benefit the Camden Rockport Elementary School Backpack Program.
