Joyce Herndon Pendleton, obituary
Joyce Herndon Pendleton died peacefully at age 99 on December 29, 2022, at Sussman House in Rockport. She was born on August 4, 1923 in Atlanta, Georgia to C.B. Kate and O. E. Herndon.
She is survived and dearly missed by her daughter Jan Pendleton of Camden and Jan’s family: Steve Kahn, son David Kahn of Camden and his family, Annelise Parham and their children Theo and Mae; son Matt Kahn of Londonderry, New Hampshire and his wife Meredith Goldberg; and Joyce’s son-in-law Mark Madden of Charleston, South Carolina.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William C. Pendleton; and her younger daughter, Jean Pendleton Madden.
Joyce had a stellar career in education as a reading teacher and tutor in Westport, Connecticut, instilling a love of word games and proper English in her daughters. She brought much beauty into the world with her expert quilting, knitting, and gardening.
She lifted people up and made everyone feel valued. Even in her last years, she would ask herself, “How did I make the world a better place today?” She left a trail of love that her family will strive to maintain.
Services will be private.
