Herman and Bessie Thayer, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Herman Thayer, 84, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024 ten days after the passing of his wife Bessie Thayer, 86, on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Herman was born on May 25 1934 in Rockland, Maine, the son of Herman Thayer Sr. and Lona Reynolds. As a young child he moved with his family to Old Orchard, where he attended Scarborough schools. Returning to this area, Herman worked for Fisher Engineering and SAD 5 as a bus driver before retiring.
Bessie was born August 2, 1937 in Rockland, Maine, the daughter of Arthur Woodman and Grace Perry. Bessie graduated from Rockland High School in 1956. She went to work for F. J. O’Hara & Son Sea Food in Rockland before beginning employment with Dr. Barbara Fisher. She returned to O’Hara’s for more than 25 years. Upon the closing of the factory, Bessie earned certification as a CNA at Region 8 vocational Technical School in Rockland. She later worked several years with ASK Homestead at St. George and has since worked Part time with that organization until her retirement.
On August 29, 1963 Herman and Bessie got married in South Thomaston. They enjoyed over 50 years of motorcycle riding and loving all the pets they had over the years.
Herman is predeceased by his parents; sisters, Mary Surette and Helen Harvey.
Bessie is predeceased by her parents; and a brother, John Woodman.
They are both survived by a nephew, AJ Woodman; nieces, Lona Siebert, Cheryl Flower and Heather Whitter; and sister/sister-in-law, Barbara Skillings.
A graveside service will be held for Herman and Bessie on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Ash Point Cemetery, Owls Head.
