Former Crosby School in Belfast on auction block Dec. 2
BELFAST — The former Crosby School in Belfast will be up for auction December 2 at the school. Open houses are scheduled for November 12 and 18 between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The building’s owner, National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped, has authorized Tranzon Auction Properties to set a minimum sale bid of $400,000.
This sale by auction was announced with less than 30 days notice, a choice made by NTWH.
In June 2014, NTWH sought out potential buyers. Due to various aspects such as mixed messages, the desire to sell to an entity with a common mission, and a $2 million price tag, no investors came forward, according to our previous article.
The 38,000-square-foot Crosby High School, located at 96 Church Street, is named after Anne Crosby Johnson, granddaughter of Maine Gov. William G. Crosby.
Crosby Johnson contributed $40,000 toward the school’s construction in 1923. The building was used as a high school until 1965, continued on as a middle school, and was a site location for the movie Peyton Place in 1957. NTWH purchased the building in 1995, investing $4 million in renovations, according to .thecrosby.org/history.html.
