The eagle lands...on Camden’s High Street
CAMDEN — Bald eagles used to be a common sight in Camden, back in the early 2000s when there was a nesting pair that annually worked hard to raise a family on Curtis Island. But a big storm knocked down their huge nest of branches and twigs out of the pine tree it had been in for years, and then pressure from ospreys made them a seldom, but always welcome sight.
Sometimes they can be seen soaring high over the harbor, often mistaken for osprey, or vice versa. They are more likely these days to be seen alongside Megunticook Lake, where a nesting pair is monitored each winter and spring by residents. They also come to Hosmer Pond and other frozen lakes, in search of bait and scraps left behind by ice fishermen.
But on Saturday, Camden High Street resident Jack McKenney captured two photographs of an eagle in a tree outside his home. Keep your eyes open, especially now that leaves are falling off the trees. You never know what kind of bird or animal you might spy if you slow down and look closely.
