Dorcas Eldridge Zeiner, obituary
ROCKLAND — Dorcas Eldridge Zeiner passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Sussman House in Rockport on the evening of December 13, 2023.
Born in Biddeford, September 22, 1930 to Eleanor and Arthur Eldridge, she spent most of her childhood in her beloved Kennebunkport. Blessed with a positive attitude and a true zest for living, this woman had an amazing life which she shared with her family and dear friends.
She met Charlie Zeiner on a double date in 1948 when they both worked at the old summer hotel, The Langsford House, in Cape Porpoise. Married in 1950, they moved to Vermont for a short time for Charlie’s job, eventually moving back to Kennebunkport in 1962.
Dorcas went back to work in 1967 after her youngest went off to school. Kennebunkport town office hired her as assistant to the tax assessor. In 1976, she was promoted to the tax assessor position which she held until retirement in 1984. Her love of Kennebunkport, its’ land and history, motivated her to become a founding member of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust in 1973. After retirement, she was appointed to the State of Maine Board of Tax Assessors which she enjoyed until 2000.
Charlie shared her zest for life as they travelled, spent lots of time with family and golfed together from retirement in 1984 until just a few years ago. We will forever remember her for these favorite things: her family, music, dancing, gardening, friends, sea glass, fried oysters, beaches, Kennebunkport, Robert Frost and anything to do with the ocean.
Dorcas was predeceased by son Mark in 2006.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Charlie; her daughters, Lorrie Zeiner (Skip Williams), Kelly Zeiner (Ernie Piper); her son Chip Zeiner (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Joshua Miller (Jasmine), Clint Miller (Jaymes Shive), Eliot, Ernie and Jari Piper; and great-grands, Sophia and Scarlett Miller.
There will be a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food pantry of your choice.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Bartlett Woods, Pen Bay Medical, Augusta Rehab and Sussman House for their compassion and tender care.
