Crawford leaving Vinalhaven superintendent position
VINALHAVEN — After two school years at the helm of the Vinalhaven School, Superintendent Roy G. Crawford is allowing his contract to expire at the end of June.
“I have certainly enjoyed and embraced the challenge of being part of the Vinalhaven School community, but I need the flexibility to support my family: from Maine to Ohio to Colorado,” Crawford wrote in a letter to the school community of 160 students and 25 teachers.
The Vinalhaven superintendent position is a part-time position, which Crawford says does not work well with his leadership style and skills.
“Throughout my career I have been a ‘hands on’ administrator involved with the school 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” he said. “I find that I cannot be the leader I aspire be on a parttime basis. This observation is not a criticism of the leadership configuration at VS, but rather a personal recognition of my own leadership style and skills.”
Before moving to Vinalhaven, Crawford served as a teacher and coach at Mattanawcook Academy; teacher, coach, assistant principal and athletic director at York High School; principal at Monmouth Academy; superintendent of Monmouth Schools; Director of Bonn International School in Germany; superintendent in Maniutou Springs, Colorado; and Head of School in Cambodia and Malta.
The position is currently being advertised and applications will be accepted until Feb. 25.
At a Jan. 30 school board meeting, board members discussed the potential of creating a new all-school assistant principal position or separating the current all-school principal into two principal roles.
In the latter, there would be a lower school principal to serve PK-5 students and an upper school principal to serve the middle and high school students.
The board is considering also delegating some of the responsibilities currently held by the superintendent to other staffers.
