Artist Gil Coyle Featured at Annual Summer Celebration
ROCKPORT — It’s Time for the 18th Annual Summer Celebration at Michael Good Gallery on Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Complimentary refreshments and Peruvian music usher in a show by Gil Coyle. Located at 325 Commercial Street (Route 1) in Rockport, the free indoor/outdoor event is a tradition at the iconic MidCoast cultural center.
"Gil Coyle's new fiber work is particularly fascinating," confirmed Avi Good, Gallery Manager. "When we moved the Gallery back to Rockport earlier this year, we knew we wanted our annual summer celebration to be especially fantastic this year. We have so much to celebrate! A reunified and expanded Michael Good art center, fresh new faces to show, and an expansive program of events, workshops, and future plans. We are coming back to our roots, perfect timing as we approach our 40th anniversary (just around the corner!). It's easy to salute Gil Coyle once again, an artist we have had the honor and pleasure to work with for many years. The heart of the summer is the best time to celebrate with friends and fans. Come meet Gil, and see what's new and beautiful on Route 1!"
Artist Gil Coyle, a resident of MidCoast Maine, will show her new work in an exhibit titled "8457 Knots and Counting," from August 10th through September 30th. Inspired by recent travels, the knotted fiber pieces are a dramatic departure from her previous 2D portfolios, much of which is currently shown at Michael Good Gallery. Based on Peruvian cultural customs, the new fiber pieces reflect Coyle's lifelong affinity for primitive arts, folk arts, and Native American art. This current body of work is her modern interpretation of ideas and techniques heavily influenced by ancient traditions. During the exhibition, recorded Peruvian music will be played in order to create an atmosphere that reflects the culture and landscape which directly inspired Gil Coyle's new work.
"People have told me that my creative process is akin to a Jazz musician," stated Coyle."It is emotive, intuitive and spontaneous. I begin with a few notes, a few ideas, and the finished works ensue from the interplay of the ideas and the media. The process is consuming, rhythmic . . . the medium informs the idea, the idea informs the memory, the memory finds expression in the art."
Born and raised on Long Island, NY, Ms. Gil Coyle has a teaching and arts degree from Denver University and has attended classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, New York University, and the Art Students League of New York. Originally a potter, she shifted to other media after developing lead poisoning. For many years she taught art in public and private schools in MA, worked at the Children's Media Center in NYC, and taught at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle. She has received numerous First Prize and other awards, and her work is included in the permanent collection of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland ME, as well as in many private and corporate collections around the world.
Additionally, the Summer Celebration will introduce new works by Gallery artists Antonio Bernardo, John Shane, and Francois Debien.
