Appleton Village School teacher receives Redy Award
ROCKPORT — Let’s Go! Knox County awarded Jared Todd, the second-grade teacher at Appleton Village School, with a Redy Award for his commitment, leadership and innovation in creating a healthy learning environment for all of his students by incorporating physical activity into every learning day.
Todd was inspired to integrate more physical activity into his lessons after seeing Jack Hartmann — a highly recognized educator/musician who has produced activities that integrate music, exercise and academic practice — present at a conference a few years ago. Studies have shown that physical activity improves classroom behavior, increases student motivation and boosts academic achievement.
“Teachers’ evaluations have become much more rigid and, at first glance, it may seem difficult to attend to the physical needs of children,” said Todd, in a recent news release.
He said he has seen firsthand how brief periods of exercise in the classroom can help his students refocus and become more attentive. He uses quick movement breaks throughout the day that do not take away from instructional time, such as incorporating physical activity while transitioning from one activity to another.
It’s not always about learning and academics; sometimes kids just need to have fun. During the month of October Todd’s class often did the Monster Mash, which helped students get their blood flowing and heart rates up after sitting at their desks.
“I strongly believe in being responsive to the needs of the whole child, especially their natural need for movement and exercise,” said Todd.
