And the Rockland Scarecrow Days winners are....
Selected from a collection of dozens of custom-designed scarecrows spread around the City, the Rockland Scarecrow Days committee has announced the winners.
The decision of the judges was unanimous:
First Prize: The Riley School - "Demeter and Eric with the Endless Neck"Second Prize: City of Rockland - "Stu Too"Third Prize: Chelsea Upham of Sea Maine Art - "Shellsea"
Rockland Main Street board member, Scarecrow Days coordinator, and Grasshopper Shop Manager Livka Farrell said that the event was an overall success, in spite of the fact that heavy winds and rain on two occasions impacted a number of the sculptures over the last several days. Farrell said that the creators of the various scarecrows, along with other helpers, were able to repair damages and return the human-sized displays to their original location.
According to Gordon Page, executive director of Rockland Main Street, this was the second year of the promotion, designed to bring families to the downtown district. This was the first year that residents were invited to participate and to add scarecrows to their neighborhoods, as well as children's organizations from around Knox County that were invited to display their creations on Main Street.
Judges for this year's Rockland Scarecrow Days were Mayor Lisa Westkaemper; artist & educator Kim Bernard; and scarecrow frame builder and local resident, Tom Woodman. Drucinda Woodman provided support for the project.
Scarecrows will remain on exhibit through Halloween. Anyone who would like to acquire a frame to build their own scarecrow may contact Rockland Main Street for information at rocklanddowntown@gmail.com.
