Alma ‘Sherry’ MacMillan Steele, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Alma ‘Sherry’ MacMillan Steele, 72, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2023, at the Sussman House in Rockport, Maine, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Youngest of 6 children, Sherry was born at home on December 17, 1950 in Thomaston Maine to Garfield and Cecelia Maxcy MacMillan. She loved reading, was compassionate and having five older siblings Sherry developed her sense of humor early.
Sherry attended elementary school in Thomaston, Maine before moving and graduating from East Hartford High in East Hartford Connecticut in 1969.
Sherry met her husband, James Steele, and they were married for 42 years and have two children and three grandchildren.
Sherry worked for the State of Maine for over 45 years. Over her time with the State she met and had many co-workers and friends, most of whom she even considered family. She often joked about being part of the ‘water club’ back in the day, which was funny because why pay for water when it’s free out of the tap?
She was predeceased by her parents, Garfield and Cecelia MacMillan; brothers James, Miles (Bud), Gary and Alan MacMillan; and her father-in-law, Roger Steele.
She is survived by her husband, James Steele of Owls Head; daughter Hilary Steele Severson and her husband Andy of Waldoboro; son Timothy Steele of Owls Head; grandchildren Jacoby and Kasen Severson of Waldoboro and Rylea Evans of Owls Head; mother-in-law, Doris Steele of Owls Head; sister Mona Willis and husband John of Woonsocket Rhode Island; sisters-in-law Molly MacMillan of Thomaston, Carolyn MacMillan of Scarborough, Lisa MacMillan of Manchester, Conneticut, Clara MacMillan of Jacksonville, Texas, Audrey Pine of Virginia Beach, Virginia; brothers-in-law Bruce Steele and fiancée Diane Kimball of Camden, and Steven Steele and wife Donna of Thomaston; along with so many nieces and nephews who loved her.
Funeral will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, at 11 a.m., at St. Bernard Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland, ME.
In lieu of flowers, Sherry would want you to smile, be kind to others, hug your loved ones tighter and think of her often.
