Abbott George Martin, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Abbott George Martin, 85, of Vinalhaven, Maine, died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 14, 2024.
He was born on April 14, 1939, to Ethel and Benjamin Martin, in Vinalhaven, Maine.
Abbott was the 2nd Assistant Chief for the Vinalhaven Fire Dept. and a member of the Masons. He quit school in 8th grade to start working to help support his family. At 17, he enlisted into the Army at Fort Benning, Georgia, ultimately being released after boot camp as the war had ended.
Shortly after getting out of the service, he married Cheryl Headley and had two children. In 1989 he met his life partner Roberta (Bobbie) Hall. They later married on December 18, 2004.
Abbott loved spending time with his family and friends. He would go clamming, fishing, lobstering, and loved visiting New Jersey to fish on the beach with Bobbie’s longtime friends Frank and Carol Reinhardt.
Abbott worked many fishing jobs before doing plumbing for WW Bunker and Son. He worked much of his life as a caretaker and lobsterman, retiring only 5 years prior to his passing.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Benjamin Martin; 12 brothers and sisters; as well as many close friends.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Hall; brother, Louis Martin; children, Daniel (Jessica) Martin, and Milsue (Brenda) Martin; step son, Jesse (Denise) Gant; grandchildren, Casey (Earl) Dwyer, Chrissy Martin, Charlotte
Martin, Sydney Martin, Emily Gant, and Jesse Gant III; as well as a great granddaughter, Leah Dwyer.
A celebration of life will be held on June 29, at 1 p.m., at Brown’s Head Cemetery.
