Memorial Day in Belfast: Paying respect
BELFAST — Although Belfast’s Memorial Day services got off to a wet start, the rain had stopped by the time the parade began its procession through the streets.
Led by Maine State Representative Erin Herbig, the parade began in Reny’s parking lot before traveling down Main Street.
Residents and visitors lined the street to pay their respects to those who lost their lives while serving in America’s armed forces.
The day of observance began after the incredible loss of life suffered during the Civil War, when more than 500,000 lives were lost during the battle.
Girl scouts participating in the parade handed out stars taken from American flags too damaged to fly, along with a note reading: I am part of our American Flag.
“I have been flown somewhere in this country. I can no longer fly. The sun & winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder you are not forgotten.”
