Book discussion series
BELFAST — The Belfast Free Library will partner with the Game Loft to host a community book discussion series on the theme of the American Revolutionary War and its impact on the Penobscot Bay region of Maine. The books to be read and discussed are, Come Spring: by Ben Ames Williams and The Reverend Jacob Bailey — Maine Loyalist: by James S. Leamon. Each of the four discussions will be facilitated by a scholar and will be held Thursday's beginning March 10, from 3-5 p.m. in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library.
Participants are invited to read one or both of the books which are available to borrow from the library; young adults (ages 11 and up) as well as adults are encouraged to join this community book discussion series. To sign up and reserve a copy of the book(s) please stop by the main circulation desk of the library or call 338-3884 ext. 10.
The first discussion, on March 10, will be facilitated by Liam Riordan, professor of history, University of Maine, Orono and Director of the UMaine Humanities Center. Professor Riordan will put the books in historical context with the discussion focusing on the time period and location.
On Thursday, March 31, the topic will be War for Independence or Revolution? An examination of the causes of the war and choosing sides. Noted author and historian Barry Rodrigue will facilitate.
The third discussion April 21, will focus on the Penobscot Expedition. The facilitator is still to be determined. The final meeting on May 12, will be about the impact of the war in the Penobscot Bay Area with a "Coming of Age in America" role-players presentation.
