CAMDEN — The Camden Public Library is pleased to announce its upcoming events from Jan. 28 — Feb. 11.
Thursday, Jan. 28
"Ukrainian Eggs" Workshop conducted by Jim and Chris Sady, 7 p.m. Please call 236-3440 to register; there is a $10 materials fee for the workshop.
Saturday, Jan. 30
Winterfest kicks off with Community Ice Carving in the Camden Amphitheatre, noon to 3 p.m., with ice carving, music, and hot food outdoors, and live music with All That Jazz and kids' activities indoors in the library. In Harbor Park, there will be CamJam snowboarding events all day, and at 2:30 p.m. there will be a Polar Plunge at the head of the harbor hosted by Coastal Mountains Land Trust. On the Village Green, snow sculptors will be creating dazzling creations in competition for the state title.
Tuesday, Feb. 2
Camden Garden Club presents "A Colonial Revival Flower Garden" 10 a.m., with Barbara McNulty and Judy Brogden, aspiring Master Gardeners, to discuss their research, preparation, and installation of the colonial garden at the General Henry Knox Museum in Thomaston.
"Groundhog Day" (1993, 101 minutes, PG, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell) free movie, 6 p.m., part of Camden's Winterfest celebration and appropriately enough will be shown on Groundhog Day.
Wednesday, Feb. 3
Regular Midcoast Stroke Support Group meeting, 10 a.m., all are welcome.
The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers perform "Everybody Loves Pirates" at the Camden Opera House at 6 p.m., part of Camden's Winterfest celebration. Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers is a troupe based in Bar Harbor. The performance is hosted by the Winterfest Committee and the Camden Public Library. Tickets are available in advance at the library; tickets are $5, with a Family Rate of $15. Children under 5 are free.
Thursday, Feb. 4
New Hope for Women will host a special event for teens, "In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence," 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Everyone knows someone who is in an unhealthy relationship. Ever think it could never happen to you? Pizza will be provided so RSVPs are required, lcouture@newhopeforwomen.org.
Saturday, Feb. 6
"Fairies in the Snow" Tea Party 1 p.m., with author Liza Gardner Walsh and illustrator Hazel Mitchell for an afternoon making fairies. Kids can join in fairy attire for a special reading, crafts, and activities. The author and illustrator will have books available for sale and signing. There will be light refreshments.
Sunday, Feb. 7
Allison McKellar will speak on "A Passion for Human Rights" about her struggle to be more than just a bystander when it comes to the crisis in Syria. She'll discuss her work with NuDay Syria, delivering food, medical supplies, clothing, and her project of collecting marine shrink-wrap for tents and hospitals. Hosted by Dragon Farm Salons.
Monday, Feb 8
The Destination Wellness Brown Bag Lunch Series at noon will feature Dr. Lauren Ball on "Cannabis as a Medication."
Tuesday, Feb. 9
The Camden Garden Club's Winter Horticulture Series will feature "Botanical Illustration" with Linda Heppes Funk, at 10 a.m. All are welcome.
Leer y charlar is Read and chat — entirely in Spanish! Spanish language reading and conversation group, 1 p.m. All who are proficient in Spanish are welcome.
Regular meeting of the Camden Philosophical Society Reading Group, 4 p.m., all who enjoy a good discussion are welcome.
The Camden Conference hosts "International Aid Work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: local perspectives and unintended consequences" with Camden resident, Marisa Lloyd, 7 p.m.
