Marjorie Strauss to exhibit at Good Tern
ROCKLAND — The Good Tern Co-Op Cafe Gallery will feature the ink wash photographs of Marjorie Strauss through Feb. 3.
As an artist, Strauss works in a variety of media: painting, photography and sculpture. She moved to Maine over 30 years ago to be closer to nature. Before that, each time she visited she would make a bee-line for the ocean and try to capture the fluid movement of water with pastel.
Once living here, she gradually shifted her attention to the trees and the woods, sometimes catching a glimpse of the water through them, but they became the focus of her work: their still life and the expression of their branches seeming to stir the air around them. Trees, smaller plants and the luscious color of certain flowers continue to inspire her.
In the "washed" photos, she runs digital photographs through a printer in a manner that causes the ink to run. The images still seem to keep the sense of light, which is what describes the form, and interesting color effects happen with the ink. The process is fun, unpredictable and her way of doing watercolors. She has then made photographic prints of some of these images and has made hand additions of pastel and other media to some.
The Good Tern is at 750 Main St. in Rockland. Call 594-8822 for more information.
