Lobster SUP CUP draws solid numbers for three-day event
ROCKPORT — The third annual Lobster SUP Cup was held over the weekend, organized by Thor Emery and Amy Gertner, with the help of many volunteers.
“I want to thank the volunteers, Amy Gertner, Rockport Harbor, Megunticook Lake, Polartec and all the racers who traveled up to the Midcoast for the event," said Emery. "We had more than 50 racers for the various races combined."
This year it ended up being 31.5 tough miles of racing over three days. The ocean courses featured head winds and fighting the current for some long stretches.
After three great days of racing in the men’s division Emery picked up the win. Canadian Pro Tamas Buday Jr. (a Canadian Olympic sprint canoer turned SUP racer) had won the first two days but then went on vacation with his family Sunday. That allowed Emery his first win of the Lobster Sup Cup.
“This was the first year that we went to the three day format (it has been two days in the past), and it is challenging,” said Emery. “Most races are at most 10-miles. Having to hold race pace for three days at that distance is tough. We also held a 2.8-mile rec race and kids race on Sunday.”
