Waldo County Sheriff’s beat: Lots of crashes, including one that killed a horse in the road
BELFAST — The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity Feb. 18-24. An arrest or summons does not imply guilt.
Feb. 8 (late entry)
Deputy Cody Laite responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Poland Woods Road in Morrill, where one vehicle was traveling behind the other. The leading car reportedly crossed the center line in preparation to make a wide right turn into a driveway. The second car’s driver told Deputy Laite they didn’t know what the leading car was doing and attempted to pass on the right at the same time the leading car made its right turn, resulting in a collision. Both vehicles sustained functional damage. There were no injuries.
Feb. 11 (late entry)
Deputy Laite responded to the scene of a single-vehicle accident on North Palermo Road in Freedom, where a driver came upon two horses running in the road straight at their vehicle. The driver was unable to avoid collision, with one horse striking the passenger panel, resulting in substantial damage and the death of the horse. The second horse hit the driver’s side corner of the vehicle resulting in minimal damage and no injury to the horse. The vehicle was towed. The driver was uninjured.
Feb. 18
Deputy Laite responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Mountain Moody Road in Searsmont, where one driver was attempting to pull out of their driveway when struck by another vehicle. The driver attempting to leave the driveway reported having an obstructed view due to a high snow bank, and so was inching out of driveway. The second vehicle was unable to slow to avoid a collision. Neither vehicle required towing. There were no injuries.
Feb. 19
Crystal P. Stone, 59, of Montville, was issued a summons for an inspection sticker violation.
Feb. 20
Mark Riposta, 58, of Belfast, was issued a summons for operating after suspension.
Feb. 21
Jennifer M. Guptill, 22, of Vinalhaven, was issued summonses for two inadequate tires and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
Steven Greenmyer, 40, of Thomaston, was issued a summons for operating without a license.
Deputy Laite responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Route 1 in Northport, near Pound Hill Road, where a southbound vehicle began to lose control on the icy roads, and ended up “fish-tailing” along the road. The operator reportedly over-corrected, causing the vehicle to go into a clockwise spin in the northbound lane. A northbound vehicle was unable to avoid colliding with spinning vehicle, and the impact sent the southbound vehicle spinning counter-clockwise before it came to rest on the center yellow line. The northbound vehicle came to rest in the breakdown lane. The operator of the first car received a facial injury and was transported by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. The operator of the second vehicle reported no injuries, though a passenger reportedly sustained a head injury. All of the occupants of the second vehicle were ultimately also transported by ambulance to the hospital.
