Marilyn R. ‘Lyn’ Snow, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Marilyn Ruth "Lyn" Snow, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Born May 13, 1941, in Fall River, Mass., she was the daughter of O.B. and Holly Hollingsworth Seagrave. Lyn was predeceased by her brother, "Robby" Seagrave.
Lyn graduated from Case High School in Swansea, Mass., in 1959. She went on to receive a nursing degree from Burbank Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. Lyn stayed home to raise her three children and later returned to earn a bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif., and eventually her Masters Degree in Family Counseling from Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., in 1985. She worked privately as a therapist, and volunteered for many years with Hospice in Northern California.
In the summer of 1986 Lyn moved to Maine and married her beloved Jack Snow. Their incredible love and respect for each other inspired all who knew them. They lived in his farmhouse in South Thomaston, where the door was always open to family and friends. Lyn was a remarkable artist who made her mark in the art world with her lyrical and detailed floral watercolors. She and Jack spent more than 25 years on the road, exhibiting and selling at such prominent shows as the Boston Flower Show and the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was the recipient of numerous national and local awards and at one time had galleries in both Portland and Rockland. She was once complimented by the late Andrew Wyeth when he visited her gallery and watched her paint. While Lyn's work was nationally known, it was her kind spirit and generosity that caught the attention of her fellow artists and fans. She donated works of art to any organization that asked, and her work is proudly displayed in hospitals and businesses across Maine.
Lyn retired this fall, closing the gallery on Main Street in Rockland to spend more time with the youngest of her grandchildren, Joseph and Abigail Sampson, Molly and Sally Whittington, Sam Richards and Justin Snow. Lyn was happiest with her family and friends, whether over coffee in her kitchen or on the coast of Florida watching a family fishing competition. She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Lyn is survived by her husband; her three children, Susie Whittington and her husband, Guy, of Mount Vernon, Sarah Richards and her husband, Todd Richards, of Round Pond, and John Sampson of Rockland; and her sisters, Sue Shane and her husband, Stephen, of Yarmouth, and Sally Lucas Snow and her husband, Greg, of South Thomaston; and a sister-in-law, Catharine Baker Snow. She is also survived by Jack's children, Stephen Snow, Johnny Snow and his wife, Robin, Rachael Snow, Rebecca Snow and Patty Snow; their children; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A Eucharistic Service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 11 White St. in Rockland. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow immediately and all are welcome to celebrate in the joy of her life and new beginning.
Flowers are gratefully accepted; however those who wish may make memorial donations to 100 Acre Wood, 92 South Clary Road, Jefferson, ME 04348.
