Warren man vies for Walmart shelves
WARREN — Ronald Haney, of Warren, is hopeful his product will be voted into Walmart stores. He markets several types of waxes under the name of Ron's Detail and Wax that are manufactured in Maine through his home-based business. His wax, he said, is superior to others and he is hoping that is what will get him onto the shelves at Walmart. Starting out as a mail order business, his products are now carried by Hamilton Marine and are sold at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. It’s not just marketing. There’s a reason, said Haney, that his product is superior.
Haney has been detailing automobiles part-time for 20 years and just a year ago bought into the company that manufactures the wax. The company tweaked the formula for Haney’s need giving it a higher Carnauba value. The wax has been made in Maine since the early 1970s.
“The formula is my formula and my wax,” said Haney.
Haney markets three types of auto wax, as well as a special wax for recreational vehicles and campers, and a wax for boats.
“Carnauba is taken from the leaves of the Carnauba tree, which is a South American tree,” said Haney. “It’s a natural hardener and in addition, my wax is not full of additives; it’s a natural green wax.”
Walmart sponsored a contest online called “Get it on the shelves,” and they are looking for American-made products. Haney and his wife, Pamela, made a video and posted it on Youtube and submitted it to Walmart.
“Walmart liked my video and they liked my product," said Haney. "I’m in the running you could say. It’s a voting process and you go online to do it. People watch the videos and then vote for featured product. If I win I get my product in their stores. I’ve made the first round. Now it’s up to more people to view the video and vote. Voting ends Sept. 2, 2013.”
Haney and his wife have lived in Warren for 22 years.
“It really is a good wax,” said Haney. "One container will do 30 to 50 full-size cars. It seems a little pricey, but when you figure that’s about 50 cents a wax job, that’s really a bargain. It’s on eBay and I’ve shipped it to every state. I've got a lot of customer comments, too, on ebay and everyone is a satisfied customer.”
