ROCKPORT — Barnswallow Books will debut Chickadee Afloat, a children’s picture book, and the shop’s first published book, to the public in a holiday event for children on Saturday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Susan Beebe, the artist and daughter of the late book author and illustrator Barbara Beebe, will be on hand to read the sweet story of Chickadee, a bright yellow skiff who accidentally floats away from the shore of her island home in Maine.

“I was captivated by Barbara Beebe’s manuscript and her stunning illustrations that accompany the story, said owner Linda Lesher, in a news release. “The book is a Maine product through and through. It was written, illustrated, designed and printed in Maine. It’s also set on the coast of Maine and represents Barnswallow’s first publishing effort.” 

Adults and children are invited to gather next to the Barnswallow barn’s festively lit 20’ fir tree to hear Susan Beebe read the tale and talk about her late mother’s creative legacy and Chickadee Afloat’s journey to becoming a book.

“Please join us for this cozy event leading up to the Christmas holiday,” said the release.

Hot cocoa, cookies and other refreshment will be provided.

Chickadee Afloat is also available at Owl & Turtle Bookshop in Camden and at the many Sherman’s Bookstore locations. It is also being donated to school and public libraries in Maine.

“Our holiday barn is brimming with seasonal gifts, ornaments, games, puzzles and specially selected books, for all of your holiday gift needs,” said Barnswallow.

Barnswallow Books will be donating the proceeds from all sales in December to Darrowby Farm Sanctuary.
