Shirley Smith, obituary
Shirley Smith, 85, of Liberty, went to be with the Lord November 27, 2023 while residing at the Homestead in Cushing, Maine.
She was born November 11, 1938 to Morris and Evelyn Scates of Liberty, Maine. She was the second oldest of her four siblings, predeceased by her older sister, Beverly Parker, of Liberty, and is survived by her brother, Vernon Scates, and her baby sister, Carolyn Haskell.
She was a Walker High School graduate and then worked as a secretary for the superintendent of schools in Searsmont where she met and married Morris Smith, Sr., her husband of 62 years.
Shirley and Morris spent their lives surrounded by friends, family and wonderful neighbors. She committed most of her life in service to her community working for the Republican party. She was always a familiar face at the polling station on election day.
As a mom, she always was involved with running her kids to school functions while serving six years on the school board.
After being invited to a Bible study, her faith began to grow. She became an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where she served by teaching Sunday school and being the church treasurer. She also loved to take her flowers to church every Sunday.
Shirley loved taking pictures of family and friends and the beauty all around her. She was a wonderful cook. You could always stop by for a cup of tea and all manner of cakes, cookies or pies. She brought warmth to her home, a warmth that will be missed but forever remembered.
Shirley was survived by her son, Morris Smith, Jr., and wife Michelle, of Noblesville, Indiana; daughter Lori Kurr and husband, Jesse, of Rockland, Maine; grandchildren Danicka, Beckley, and Matt ,of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Elisabeth Greeley and Lincoln, of Freedom, Maine; David Kurr, of Rockland, and five great grandchildren. We will miss her greatly.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday December 2, 2023 from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 am at Liberty Baptist Church.
