Black Opry Revue brings Black country, folk artists to Strand Theatre, Nov. 10
ROCKLAND — The Black Opry Revue will bring three Black artists to the Strand Theatre stage on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Taylor Rose Mickens, Grace Givertz, and Ben Jordan will explore the sounds and intersections that happen when country, blues, folk, and Americana music overlap and weave together, according to the Strand, in a news release.
The Black Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country music.
“Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception, but they have often been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives” said the release.
The Black Opry invites audiences to discover, support and enjoy the Black artists that make this music.
“One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound; the Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to country, folk and Americana,” said the release.
Taylor Rose Mickens is an indie jazz folk singer, composer, and actor. Mickens’ background in many musical genres such as jazz, indie, musical theater, and folk come together to inform a unique sound in their original music and their approach to songwriting. The NYC/New England-based artist has worked in theater regionally and in Broadway team-led workshops and readings.
Grace Givertz is a multi-instrumentalist with a large voice who uses her honest lyrics to bring a refreshing sound to folk. Born and raised in Jupiter, Florida, Givertz has been writing songs and performing since she was eleven years old, and appears at Boston venues including Great Scott, Club Passim, and ONCE Ballroom.
Ben Jordan, currently based in Bristol, UK, can best be classified as a modern troubadour after traveling and performing around the world for many years, according to the release. His Americana/roots songs range from intimate ballads to high energy foot stompers, and he’s known for his warm and often hilarious rapport with the audience.
Tickets are $25/General Admission. Beer and wine are available at concessions. To buy tickets, or for more information, visit www.rocklandstrand.com or call (207) 594-0070.
