Artist Statement:
I am a self-taught watercolor painter with books as my teachers. Painting has been a healer for my homesickness and a rare luxury in living—two or three days a year for more than ten years—until my hobby became my profession. Even then I had to stop painting for a few years at a time for various reasons, including illness. Nevertheless, painting never left my heart.
The best times for me to capture light and color in the natural world, like for photographers, is early morning and late afternoon. This coincided with my daily routine, going to school and coming back home. I begin with line drawings with lots of notations, including the direction of the light and the mixing of the pigments to convey the colors I was attracted to in the first place. The landscapes in this show a started outdoors and were completed in my studio. Through my work I want others to feel the peacefulness, the beauty, and the excitement that nature offers. In this exhibit I would like to share such feelings with you. I am also looking forward to resuming outdoor painting in my new surroundings with new friends.
