Belfast man charged with aggravated assault after choking two
BELFAST — Belfast man has been charged with numerous crimes following an incident June 28, where he is accused of choking two men and assaulting an officer.
Carmine Ferrante, 44, of Belfast, was charged with criminal trespass, aggravated assault, and assault on an officer as a result of the incident, which took place on Belmont Avenue.
Ferrante came to the attention of Belfast Police after his landlord reported an assault on a different resident of their shared apartment complex, according to Detective Gerald Lincoln.
Officer Colby Leavitt responded to the scene, where he spoke with the initial victim who reportedly stated that Ferrante approached his residence and began banging on the door. When the victim opened the door to tell him to stop, Ferrante began to choke the man.
After breaking free from Ferrante and closing the door, the victim’s wife called the property landlord to report the incident, who in turn called police before traveling to the property to speak to Ferrante.
The landlord confronted Ferrante, who then began to choke him. The property manager was also able to break free from Ferrante, statements allege.
Ferrante was not charged for the reported assault on his landlord, who declined to cooperate with police.
Ferrante was arrested and transported to Waldo County Jail where he assaulted a correctional officer during processing, leading to the charge of assault on an officer.
He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 29.
